Protecting Liberty On This Independence Day

I enjoyed reading about Mormon’s description of the stripling warriors, in Alma 53:17, 20-21:

“And they entered into a covenant to fight for the liberty of the Nephites, yea, to protect the land unto the laying down of their lives; yea, even they covenanted that they never would give up their liberty, but they would fight in all cases to protect the Nephites and themselves from bondage.”

“And they were all young men, and they were exceedingly valiant for courage, and also for strength and activity; but behold, this was not all – they were men who were true at all times in whatsoever thing they were entrusted. Yea, they were men of truth and soberness, for they had been taught to keep the commandments of God and to walk uprightly before him.”

As I approach this Fourth of July, I appreciate the opportunity to live in a land where I have the liberty of to pursue many opportunities. I appreciate the description of these men, in how they were men of ‘strength and activity’. I know that I have been lazy in the past, but I am repenting, and I am gradually trying to strengthen both my body, and my spirit. We are walking more, and I am trying to be even more true and faithful to the covenants which I have made with the Lord.

I am trying to remember the Lord, and what He has done for me, more often during the day. I am trying to strive more to have His Spirit with me, and to be more aware of His promptings during the day.

I know that as I follow the promptings of His Spirit, more opportunities will surface for building His kingdom. I know that be being a man ‘of truth and soberness’, I will be more free to chose opportunities; and that the opposing path leads to spiritual bondage. I fight against the adversary who wants me to be unhappy, just like him. I fight for my liberty, and for the liberty of those whom I love.

I live in a world in which there are many distractions from the Lord’s plan of building His kingdom here upon this earth. His kingdom is a place where we are free and prosperous. I pray that I may keep these things in mind as I approach this Independence Day.
