One thing that impresses me about how the golden plates were translated into what is now The Book of Mormon, is that Joseph Smith received his commission to translate from a messenger of God, Moroni (Joseph Smith History 1:33-35). The details of this event are significant, because, in the Bible, it says:
“no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron” (Heb. 5:4)
Just like I mentioned a couple of days ago, Joseph Smith did not set out to start a church on his own. He just wanted to know which church to join.
Joseph Smith had the right spiritual qualities, and was in the right place, at the right time. God called him to perform His work. Joseph Smith had no idea about what he was supposed to do, until he received his orders from an angel of God.
The scriptures are full of examples of prophets receiving their commission from angels, and I believe that it is a requirement. Otherwise, the commission comes from man.
Here is what I wrote the previous time I read about Moroni’s visit to Joseph Smith: Moroni Visits Joseph Smith
