We went to a House Warming Party for one of Misty’s High School classmates. It was nice to meet some of her old friends and their families. It was a small party. We enjoyed talking and sharing, and spent the majority of the day with them.
“Now they were desirous that salvation should be declared to every creature, for they could not bear that any human soul should perish; yea, even the very thoughts that any soul should endure endless torment did cause them to quake and tremble.
And thus did the Spirit of the Lord work upon them, for they were the vilest of sinners. And the Lord saw fit in his infinite mercy to spare them; nevertheless they suffered much anguish of soul because of their iniquities, suffering much and fearing that they should be cast off forever.” (Mosiah 28:3-4)
What kind of torment is being spoken of here? I think of those who are not being loved and appreciated. I think of those with worldly values, which look for earthly treasures, rather than storing their treasures in heaven. I think of those who have not felt the comforting presence of the Holy Ghost, who feel alone in this world. Finally, I think of those who ‘kick against the pricks’, and knowingly do not obey the commandments of God. These are just a few of the torments people face, which I can imagine.
I am thankful that the gospel frees me from all of the torments, and others. It does so, because its message comes from a loving Heavenly Father. For it is written:
“Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?
Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?” (Matthew 7:9-11)
I know that Heavenly Father answers our prayers, and does not want us to miserable; because I attribute all of my good fortune to His loving kindness for me.
This is what I previously wrote after reading Mosiah 28: Sharing The Gospel
