The Need For A Weekly Family Home Evening

For Family Home Evening, after dinner, we had Family Scripture Study, and watched President Monson’s October 2011 General Conference talk: ‘Stand In Holy Places’. After that, we watched “Iron Man”.

Family Home Evening is a wonderful practice which has strengthened our family. It is a time to gather together, and study the scriptures, and the words of the prophets. I know that we are only as strong as we adhere to the path of righteousness, by obeying the Lord’s commandments. The practice of having a weekly Family Home Evening was introduced in April 27, 1915, by the Prophet Joseph F. Smith. Having this time together helps to keep us together to build family unity. Just like those of old, during our Family Home Evenings, we receive instruction on how to protect ourselves from the evil influences of the adversary.

For, just like them, “they were not fighting for monarchy nor power but they were fighting for their homes and their liberties, their wives and their children, and their all, yea, for their rites of worship and their church.” (Alma 43:45) More specifically, they defended themselves, and their families, and their lands, their country, and their rights, and their religion.” (Alma 43:47) They were thinking of “their lands, their liberty, yea, their freedom from bondage.” (Alma 43:49)

This evening, during President Monson’s talk, he mentioned how morals have relaxed since the ‘60s. What used to be rare, and forbidden, is now accepted as common practice. So, in our home, and with our family and friends, we need to remind ourselves of that which is pure and chaste and noble, because the teachings of the things of this world are not leading us into that direction.

This is what I previously wrote after reading Alma 43:  Looking After Each Other
