The Unprofitable Servant

I was able to wake up at my usual time, 6:30 AM, and I had a very productive morning. I read my scriptures, went to Ward Choir Practice, and read the lessons. We also made the bed. Usually, in the past, we would stay up on Saturday night, and then we would waste our Sabbath Day.

It was Fast and Testimony Day, and Bishop Brian Fitzpatrick and his counselors, Dane Englund and Herk Wright, were released. Bishop Joe Platt, and his counselors, Grant Lenning and Andy Mordy, were called.

This evening, we went to my parents’ for dinner, and to break our fast. They fed us some cabbage soup that was delicious!

It is after the trial of our faith that the Lord shows His strength. Many would have the Lord prove His powerfulness, but He does not have to prove Himself; although, we do have to prove ourselves, even though we are unprofitable servants.

“For behold, thus saith the Lord: I will not show unto the wicked of my strength, to one more than the other, save it be unto those who repent of their sins, and hearken unto my words.” (Helaman 7:23)

“And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.

And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.

But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat?

And will not rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward thou shalt eat and drink?

Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not.

So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.” (Luke 7:5-10)

Therefore, we are unprofitable, because we only have the ability to do that which we have been commanded to do. If we knew more than what we are commanded to do, then we would be profitable; but we are fully dependent on the Lord, and His benevolence.

“And except ye repent ye shall perish; yea, even your lands shall be taken from you, and ye shall be destroyed from off the face of the earth.

Behold now, I do not say that these things shall be, of myself because it is not of myself that I know these things; but behold, I know that these things are true because the Lord God has made them known unto me, therefore I testify that they shall be.” (Helaman 7:28-29)
